The Joint Schools Musical Concert
November 1948

The programme for the joint schools concert. The schools contributing were the Boys’ and Girls’ County Schools in Aberdare.

In Part 1 the conductor T.R. James was Head of Maths at the school, and conductor of the Cwmbach Male Voice Choir; Miss Meudwen Smith taught music at the school; Alun Hayward Jones was the son of the school’s caretaker, Mr David Jones.

In Part 2: Rita Baignent was a pupil at the Girls’ School; the cast of the drama production was taken from both schools; John Isaac was a pupil at the school; the producer Mr Arnold D. Matthews taught history and English from 1947 to 1953, Mr D.C. Jones taught mathematics from 1945 to 1957, E.J. Excell Games, P.T. and Art from 1922 to 1958, D.A. Lewis taught woodwork and metalwork from 1936 to 1959. Philip Jones attended the school from 1943 to 1950. After studying at the Paris Conservatoire he eventually joined the BBC Welsh Orchestra as Principal Oboist. Later as a freelance musician he played with several orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic. There is an entry about Philip in the Former Pupils section of this website.

On page 4 we see French master Mr P.E. Phillips playing in the 2nd violin section; Miss M. Howells, viola, was the peripatetic school strings tutor; Mr Gerald Reynolds, cello, was a son of T. Brinley Reynolds who at the time was Deputy Headmaster.
