GCE Ordinary Level was taken at the age of 16, unlike School Certificate, there was no minimum number of subjects required to gain a certificate. GCE Ordinary Level ceased to exist in 1994 when the General Certificate of Secondary Education, GCSE, was introduced.

Alan Abraham worked as a chemist at Aberdare Cables in Aberdare and at Pirelli Cables in Eastleigh, Hampshire.

John Beddoe was the back-up to John Lloyd as accompanist at school assemblies.

John Bowen

John Bowen is the son of J. T. Bowen, Welsh master from 1918, and Deputy Head at ABGS in the 1950s. Like his father, John attended UCW Aberystwyth. He studied Law and gained LL.B. In 1964 he commenced his legal career as an assistant solicitor with Morgan, Bruce and Nicholas in Pontypridd. There is no room to detail his career here, suffice to say that he became Chairman of the Board of Morgan Cole from 1992 to 1999. He has also become involved many other organisations. These include the University of Wales College of Medicine as a Council Member; University of Wales Lampeter as its Honorary Treasurer; the Cancer Charity, Tenovus, as a trustee and legal advisor for twenty years. He served a seven-year term as a director of the Principality Building Society.


Ralph Crooks lived at Court Vean, Werfa Road, Abernant. He was the son of W.J. Crooks, General Manager of Aberdare Cables.

Alun Christopher Davies is a retired historian. He held the post of Reader at Queen’s University, Belfast. He has an entry in the Former Pupils section of this website.

John Frederick Escott is now a retired teacher having taught at the Bishop of Hereford’s Bluecoat School for 31 years, where he was Head of PE. He started playing rugby at ABGS and went on to play for Aberaman, Caerleon, Romford and Gidea Park, and Hereford.

Kenneth Griffiths became a teacher at his old school. He has an entry in the Former Pupils section

Gareth George Jones became Managing Director of the family business, Stephens & George - printers

Michael George Jones (1935–2012) was one of the three sons of Maldwyn E. Jones and his wife Margaret, née George, of Penrhiw, Graig Place. He was a medical student at Cardiff but did not complete the course. Eventually he became post master at Ferndale. He was a one-time contestant in a BBC Brain of Britain competition. He was also a very good chess player.
His brothers were Gareth George Jones, (1937–2004), M.D. of the family business, Stephens & George - printers. The youngest brother was Richard George Jones, Ll.B., (1943–2016), a solicitor. Richard was also a very good chess player and was involved in the Student Representative Council whilst at UCW Aberystwyth. Richard lived in the family home, Penrhiw.

Michael Charles Owen had a distinguished career in the army. He has an entry in the Former Pupils section — as does his brother J.E. Owen, CBE.


Sylvia and Valerie Banner were daughters of the Managing Director of Sobells situated on the Hirwaun Industrial Estate. They lived in Rhigos.

Janet Crooks was the sister of Ralph Crooks (see above).

Menna Lynne Davies was the sister of Alun Christopher Davies, mentioned above. She taught at AGGS, and was married to the solicitor David S Bird, ABGS 1944–51.

Rosalind George was the sister of Sheridan George, ABGS 1951–58. She married John Lloyd (see above).

Shirley Ann Jenkins is an actress. She graduated from UCW Aberystwyth and taught for some years. She then trained as an actress in the Welsh College of Music and Drama, Cardiff. As Shirley King, her theatre appearances include the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre, the West Yorks Playhouse, the Phoenix Theatre, Leicester and The Grand Theatre, Swansea. She has played many roles in BBC1, BBC Wales and S4C productions as well as in ‘Stella’ produced by Netflix. She is also a voice-over artist. You may have seen her in Casualty, Trial and Retribution II, Midsomer Murders and The Inspector Alleyn Mysteries; Mortimer’s Law, The Old Devils (BBC Wales); Hapus Dyrfa (S4C) and other productions.

Mair Glannant Jones is the sister of Llinos and Gwyn Jones. They are all children of Rev Glannant Jones, minister of Saron, Aberaman. At that time this chapel had the largest capacity in the valley.

Elizabeth Mear became a reporter on the Aberdare Leader. She married John Makin, a former pupil of ABGS 1945–53. Elizabeth provided much of the material for the entry, in the Former Pupils section, of her brother John. F. Mear.

Constance Morgan has been Mrs Williams for over 60 years, married to D. N. Williams, one time chemistry and maths teacher at ABGS, 1960–65, and long serving member of Cwmbach MAle Choir. Connie taught at AGGS and St John the Baptist School in Aberdare.

Gillian Mary Oxenham is now a retired general practitioner living in London.

Wendy Roberts was from Holford Terrace, Cwmdare. She became Mrs Phillips when she married Malcolm (of the Phillips stonemason business in Trecynon). She taught in Ysgol y Comin before becoming head teacher of Hirwaun Infants School. She was one of the founders of Clochdar, the Welsh language newspaper. She lived in Llwydcoed and died in the summer of 2021.

Rita Rowberry was the daughter of Will Rowberry of Somerset House, Windsor Terrace, Abernant. She was the sister of Pearl and Alan. Rita became an air hostess.

Medi Elaine Williams is the granddaughter of D. Tyssul Davies, a builder responsible for many buildings still standing in Aberdare.
