The Certificates: The Central Welsh Board, CWB, set its first examinations in 1897, and awarded its first certificates in 1899.
The School Certificate was taken by pupils around the age of 16 years.
The Supplementary Certificate was taken at the end of the first year in the sixth form, but unlike the other stages it could be taken in separate subjects.

- D. Colin Davies was the school troop scoutmaster in the 1960s. He was educated at Ysgol y Comin, Gadlys Central School and ABGS. He won a Dr. David Thomas Scholarship to U.C.W. Aberystwyth. After a year there he transferred to the University of Oxford where he read PPE at St. Edmund Hall. Called to the Bar at Gray’s Inn, he practised, until his retirement in 2007, as a criminal lawyer in the Crown Court on the Wales and Chester Circuit. He was, until becoming a barrister, inter alia, a Wholesale Butter Merchant, a Justice of the Peace, and a member of the former Aberdare Urban District Council’s Libraries Selection Committee.
- David King Evans was the son of Ernest Evans, Coal merchant, Park Lane Trecynon. He married Barbara Crooks (daughter of the manager of Aberdare Cables), who appears in the Girls’ School list.
- Kenneth Franklyn, from Colliers Row Abernant, became a schoolteacher in north west London.
- Peter French, from Forge Trip Abernant, was active in the Little Theatre.
- Lyndon Harries taught English at Pontypridd Grammar School & Aberdare College of Further Education. He was much involved with amateur dramatics, and still, (2015), organises public readings of poetry and prose on St. David’s Day.
- Colin Lawrence became the musical director of the Cwmbach Male Voice Choir, (1983–1991). He was the headteacher of Caradog School. Son of William Lawrence, Leader of Aberdare UDC.

- Geoffrey Walter Williams Pontin was the son of another former pupil, Walter Pontin of Robertstown, (ABGS 1908–1914). Walter became a teacher at the Gadlys School. Geoff’s association with the school goes back further as his maternal grandfather was the school governor and barrister County Councillor T. Walter Williams (1858-1929) — see footnote 3 on this page for further details. Geoff Pontin forged a career across the border in England but died relatively young, aged 55, on 10 June 1985 in Rottingdean, Kent.
- Brynley Francis Roberts became Head of the National Library of Wales. He can be found in the Former Pupils section of this website.
- Walter Ryan taught at Aberdare Girls Grammar School for a period, but was notable not only for his prowess as an actor but particularly as a most accomplished pianist an accompanist. His wife Margaret Ryan was Head of Music at Aberdare Girls’ Grammar School. The couple hosted chamber music concerts in the front room of their home in Gadlys Terrace, which housed a grand piano.

- Elfed Davies became the headmaster of Hirwaun Primary School. He continues, (2015), to contribute material for this website, and has written several books about the local history of Hirwaun & Aberdare.
