GCE Ordinary Level was taken at the age of 16, unlike School Certificate, there was no minimum number of subjects required to gain a certificate. GCE Ordinary Level ceased to exist in 1994 when the General Certificate of Secondary Education, GCSE, was introduced.

GCE Advanced Level was normally taken after two years in the sixth form and was awarded in separate subjects. Students started their Advanced Level course normally taking three subjects.

School Certificate or O-level : the editor headed this results column with the name of the 16+ examination that had been known by pupils and their parents for more than fifty years. However, the editor was technically wrong to do so, as GCE Ordinary Level had taken its place from 1951, four years earlier.
