The Central Welsh Board, CWB, set its first examinations in 1897, and awarded its first certificates in 1899.

The Higher School Certificate was taken around 18 years of age. This stage remained much the same until 1951 when it was replaced by GCE Advanced Level.

The School Certificate was taken at around 16 years of age. It was replaced by GCE Ordinary Level in 1951, but unlike School Certificate, passes could be awarded in individual subjects. School Certificate required passes in at least five subjects taken from prescribed groups of subjects.
