The Certificates: The Higher Stage Certificate was taken at around 18 years; the Senior Stage at around 16 years. The Supplementary Stage was taken at the end of the first year in the sixth form, but unlike the other stages could be taken in separate subjects.

Notes

D.N.T. John was Captain of Rugby Football, 1935-36, and Captain of Cricket 1936. He was from Cwmbach and went to Bristol University after leaving school.

Gwyneth Harries became Lady Williams wife of Sir W. Tom Williams, who has an entry in the Former Pupils section. She was the daughter of Rev David Harries of Gwawr Welsh Baptist Chapel, Aberaman.

Jack Boobyer after his ‘Highers’ in 1938 obtained a State Scholarship and went to King’s College London.

David John Bowen has an entry in the Former Pupil section of this website. He worked at Bletchley Park during the War, but died in 1945 at the age of 25.

Garfield Daniel Griffiths became a teacher at the School. There are details of his career in the Teachers section of this website.

Elwyn Price Howells was from Bridge Street, Robertstown. From School he went to Trefeca College, and later became a Welsh Congregational minister. His final pastorate was at Cwmgwrach. He was Chairman of the Literature Committee of the Neath National Eisteddfod, 1994.

Emrys Jones became a distinguished professor of Geography at the London School of Economics. There is a full account of his career in the Former Pupils section of this website.

T.L. Moore of Hill Cottage, Abernant, left School for King’s College London.

Myrddin Morgan taught Mathematics and Physics at the School 1957-65, until he left to become Head of Maths at Caerphilly Girls’ Grammar School.

Emrys Walters was from Richmond Terrace, Abernant. His father was Rev. W. Walters, minister of Bethesda, Abernant, (now converted into a house). Emrys himself became a Congregational minister in Bournemouth and also a commentator for BBC Wales on numerous events that took place in southern England

Marion Rowlands is a daughter of the co-founder of the Aberdare Leader, J.L. Rowlands.

Elsie While was from Foreman’s Row Abernant. She married Eric West from Sheffield. They were both teachers in that city.

Mattie Abraham married Oliver J. Timothy (ABGS 1925 to circa 1932). She was a holder of a First Class degree in Mathematics and, as Mrs Timothy, taught the subject at both the Boys and Girls Grammar Schools in Aberdare.

Douglas Ernest Sheppard (Mountain Ash) was the younger brother of Russell John Sheppard, Glamorgan LEA County Inspector, but more significantly the founder of the Glamorgan Youth Orchestra, and Glamorgan Youth Choir. The Sheppard family lived in Upper Forest Level, Newtown, Mountain Ash.

Henry Howard Williams (Mountain Ash) was the son of the English Baptist minister at Abercynon. Howard became the Rev. Howard Williams of Bloomsbury Central Baptist Church, London.
