The Higher Stage Certificate was taken around 18 years of age.

The Senior Certificate was taken at around 16 years.

The Higher Stage Certificate remained much the same until 1951 but was renamed Higher School Certificate in 1921.

The Senior Stage Certificate became the School Certificate in 1919 although unofficially it continued to be called Senior Certificate for many years..

The Junior Stage Certificate was phased out after the 1921 examination.

The Supplementary Stage was taken at the end of the first year in the sixth form, but unlike the other stages it could be taken in separate subjects.

Notes

In the ABGS Higher Certificate results Luther James and Peter Edward Phillips later became masters at their old school.

In the ABGS Junior Certificate list there are also two boys who later became masters at their school, John Benjamin Davies (Curly), and Robert William Francis (Physics). The two boys with names Charlton Cox were sons of the Headmaster Walter Charlton Cox. All four of his children qualified as doctors.

Minnie Berry and Cyril Berry were both grandchildren of the pioneering Aberdare photographer Joseph Lendon Berry.

Thomas Aeron Edwards, lived in Brynheulog Terrace, Godreaman. He became the Head teacher of Capcoch Junior School and was the Codwr Canu at Saron Chapel, Aberaman; the largest chapel in the valley.

Evan David Harris (1901-1957) was from Cwmaman. He became a teacher at Cwmaman Junior School and was known as Ianto Harris. He died in July 1957 aged 55.

Two boys at the head of the Senior list for Mountain Ash are worth comment: one became the headmaster of Aberdare Boys County School, and later Principal of Caerleon Training College; and the other became a teacher in Port Talbot Secondary School after graduating from the University of Wales in 1925 with a double honours degree in history and mathematics. He subsequently helped a young actor from Pontyrhydyfen by suggesting the actor changed his surname to his own! The obituary of this teacher can be found here.
