Geography Field Trips
Some photos from the late Tom Evans
Many thanks to Gwyn Evans for sending a few photos found in his late father’s photo album.

Scwyd 1 A space Scwyd 2
This was the infamous trip to Sgwd yr Eira in the winter of 1962–63.
Tom Evans, Garfield Griffiths and Elfed Bowen were the sole participants..
Tom Evans said  that he had never met such treacherous conditions on any field trip before or since.
Meirion and Ton
Meirion Jenkins, (Geology) and Tom Evans (Geography).
We don’t know where or when the photo was taken, but it has to be after 1949,
by which time both men had joined the staff — and were looking decidedly youthful.
A suggested location is the former trig point on Pen y Fan.

Tom with sandwiches
A rest for a sandwich. Again, time and place unknown.

Meirion Jenkins came to ABGS in 1949 after spending two years teaching in Lancashire. During WW2 he was a meteorological officer in the RAF. Shortly after arriving at the school he took charge of Geology teaching, and much later in 1978 he became Deputy Headmaster (Pastoral). He retired in 1980, and died in 1996. He came from Bury Port in Carmarthenshire.

Tom Evans, a past pupil of the school, spent almost the whole of his career as a teacher at ABGS, from 1948 to 1979, as Head of Geography. He came to ABGS after spending two years teaching at Ardwyn Grammar School, in Aberystwyth. During WW2 he served from 1941 in The South Wales Borderers, and saw active service in the Normandy (D-Day) landings, and in engagements in France, Belgium and Holland. He retired in 1979, and enjoyed an active retirement until his death in November 2011.
