National Youth Orchestra of Wales: Concerts 1965

from Alan Davies, Bridgend Boys’ GS

This page contains the programme of the concerts given by the
National Youth Orchestra of Wales in 1965.
They took place in Wrexham, Rhosllannerchrugog, the National Eisteddfod in Drenewydd, Port Talbot, Swansea and Cardiff.

In 1965 there was just one pupil from the Cynon Valley in the orchestra, the violinist and orchestra leader, Roy Gillard from Hirwaun. Roy attended Vaynor and Penderyn Comprehensive School as he lived on the Breconshire side of the River Cynon, the county boundary in Hirwaun.

Two individuals with loose connections to Aberdare are the violinist Rhodri Ceredig, and his brother Huw Ceredig both sons of Mansel Davies, who was at our school 1924–30. Mansel became Professor of Chemistry in Aberystwyth, and Rhodri recently retired from his post of Professor of Immunology at the National University of Ireland, Galway. The late Huw Ceredig, 1948–2013, was timpanist with the Scottish National Orchestra and principal percussionist of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
