National Youth Orchestra of Wales: Concerts 1963

from Alan Davies, Bridgend Boys’ GS

This page contains the programme of the concerts given by the
National Youth Orchestra of Wales in 1963.
They took place in Newtown, Wrexham, the National Eisteddfod in Llandudno, Cardiff, Port Talbot, Barry and Swansea. There was also a recording for BBC Television for future transmission.

In 1963 there was just one pupil from the Cynon Valley in the orchestra, the violinist Roy Gillard from Hirwaun. Roy attended Vaynor and Penderyn Comprehensive School as he lived on the Breconshire side of the River Cynon, the county boundary in Hirwaun. One year later in 1964, Roy was leader of the orchestra. Non-Aberdarians include, in the oboe section, a boy who became a very successful composer and knight of the realm; and in the viola section is Alwyn Humphreys a television presenter and choral/orchestral conductor.

One person with a loose connection to Aberdare is the violinist Rhodri Ceredig, son of Mansel Davies, who was at our school 1924–30. Mansel became Professor of Chemistry in Aberystwyth, and Rhodri recently retired from his post of Professor of Immunology at the National University of Ireland, Galway.
