This article appeared in the Aberdare Leader on June 14th 1962. It features a number of former pupils of the school at a presentation of the Queen’s Guide award to Susan Clatworthy.
The Scouting and Guiding movements played a very important part in the development of many boys and girls in the town; and like several of our contemporaries, Susan was a keen Guide. Together with her sister Ruth, Susan has identified some of the people in the photo: back row from the left, 2nd left is Beverley Browne, 3rd left Sharon Browne, 5th Felicity (Bonny) Dalzell, 6th Kerry Flynn, 7th Menna Cook. Guides in the front row are Susan Clatworthy and Christine Howells. The newspaper cutting gives the names of three of the four adults present. Ruth Clatworthy should have been in the picture too — she says she was probably washing up! The event was a very important occasion with the County Commissioner as guest of honour! To gain the award was quite demanding especially as you had to tick all the boxes before your 16th birthday - Susan managed it with only a few days to spare.
If anyone can identify any of the others in the picture please let us know and we will add their names.
