National Youth Orchestra of Wales: Concerts 1964

This page contains the programme of the concerts given by the National Youth Orchestra of Wales in 1964.
They took place in Tenby, Bridgend, Newport, Cardiff, Aberdare and the Eisteddfod in Abertawe.

In 1964 there were no pupils of our school in the orchestra. However, the leader of the orchestra, Roy Gillard, came from Hirwaun - but as he lived on the Breconshire side of the village, he consequently attended the Vaynor and Penderyn Secondary School in Cefn Coed, Merthyr. Roy subsequently went on to play professionally and to teach the violin. He was associated with the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, a chamber orchestra specializing in Baroque and early Classical repertory, founded by Neville Marriner at the end of the 1950s. Roy died in 2004 in Buckinghamshire aged 58.

Miss Marie Howells* was the violin teacher allocated to both ABGS and AGGS; she set Roy as an example to her pupils.
Miss Howells lived in Dan yr Allt, on the right near the top of Abernant Road.
